Structural Design

Structural engineering is at the core of ASE GROUP. Through our member company Avid Structural Engineering, we design the structure of new buildings and alterations to existing ones, from foundations to roofs.

Our approach

We design structures that carry their loads safely, keep costs under control and leave room for the architecture. Our engineers work in wood, steel, concrete and masonry, and design for Canadian snow, wind and seismic loads under the Ontario Building Code. For renovations we assess what is already there before we change it, so new openings, additions and loads are supported properly all the way down to the foundation.

What we deliver

New building structures

Framing, floors, roofs and lateral systems for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Foundations and retaining walls

Footings, foundation walls, piles and retaining structures designed for the site and its soils.

Structural alterations

Load-bearing wall removals, new openings, beams, columns and transfer structures.

Additions and second storeys

Checks of existing foundations and framing, and design of the new structure.

Steel and connection design

Beams, columns, lintels, platforms and the connections between them.

Shop drawing review

Review of fabricator drawings for trusses, steel, precast and engineered products.

Site reviews

Inspections during construction to confirm the structure is built as designed.

Structural repairs

Repairs for cracked foundations, deteriorated concrete and damaged framing.

Typical projects

  • Load-bearing wall removals
  • Additions and second storeys
  • New homes and multi-unit buildings
  • Decks, garages and accessory structures
  • Commercial and industrial buildings

How it works

  1. Site visit and review

We inspect existing conditions and review the architectural drawings and soil information.

  2. Structural concept

The structural system is chosen to suit the design, the budget and the construction method.

  3. Calculations and drawings

Members are designed, and drawings are prepared for permit and construction.

  4. Construction review

We visit the site at key stages and answer contractor questions.
